This smoothie is high in protein from the protein powder and almond butter, and it's low in sugar, especially if you choose a low-sugar or sugar-free protein powder. The unsweetened almond milk and cocoa powder add a chocolatey flavor without adding extra sugar. The optional banana adds a bit of natural sweetness and creaminess to the smoothie, but you can leave it out if you're watching your sugar intake closely.

Ingredients

1 scoop of chocolate protein powder
1 cup of unsweetened almond milk (skim milk works too)
1 tablespoon of almond butter (unsweetened)
1/2 a ripe banana (for added creaminess and natural sweetness)
1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder

Directions

In a blender, combine the chocolate protein powder, unsweetened almond milk, almond butter, and unsweetened cocoa powder. If you're using a banana, add it now.
Blend until all the ingredients are well combined and the mixture is smooth.
Add the ice cubes and blend again until the smoothie is chilled and frothy.
Pour into a glass and enjoy immediately.

Recipe Note

A dash of cinnamon adds a nice little touch to this recipe

You can also add some leafy greens to this protein shake. I occasionally throw in a little bit of spinach just for that little vitamin boost
