The Benefits of Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, has been proven as an effective intervention for lasting weight loss and resolving obesity-related health conditions like diabetes and heart disease. This comprehensive guide will outline everything you need to know about the benefits of bariatric surgery.

Benefits of Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery

The significant and sustainable weight loss from bariatric surgery leads to impressive improvements in obesity-related health conditions. For many patients, these conditions are resolved fully or improve drastically.

Type 2 Diabetes

Major studies have shown diabetes goes into remission for 50-80% of gastric bypass patients. Remission rates are slightly lower for gastric sleeve patients, but still substantial at 30-50%. For most patients who don't achieve full remission, diabetes is much easier to control through diet or oral medications rather than insulin post-surgery.

High Blood Pressure

Up to 85% of bariatric patients see resolution of their hypertension or prehypertension. For gastric bypass in particular, high blood pressure is cured in about 76% of patients. This decrease in blood pressure minimizes the risk for stroke, kidney failure, and other complications.

High Cholesterol

Bariatric surgery significantly impacts lipid profiles and minimizes cardiovascular risk. On average, LDL "bad" cholesterol drops up to 40 points while HDL "good" cholesterol rises 8-15 points for a more favorable ratio. Triglycerides also see up to a 50% reduction. These changes lower risk of plaque buildup in arteries.

Heart Disease

With the above risk factor improvements - diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol levels - patients benefit from a drastic reduction in chance of heart attack or stroke. Some studies show over 90% decrease in heart attack risk for bariatric patients.

Sleep Apnea

Up to 65% of bariatric patients experience a cure or significant improvement in their obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). For some, weight loss from surgery alone fully resolves OSA while others require adjunct CPAP therapy. Resolution of sleep apnea enhances sleep quality and energy levels.

Sustainable Weight Loss

On average, patients lose 70% of their excess body weight with bariatric surgery. For example, if a patient weighs 300 lbs with 130 lbs of excess weight, they typically lose around 90 lbs. Some lose slightly less while others shed 100+ lbs.

Gastric bypass patients initially lose weight faster than gastric sleeve patients. Bypass patients drop around 70% of excess weight in the first 6 months to 1 year. However, weight loss slows down after the rapid initial phase. Ultimately bypass and sleeve patients achieve very comparable weight loss of 60-80% excess weight lost.

Major diet and lifestyle changes are imperative to maintain long-term weight loss success after surgery. Without adherence to healthy eating, exercise, and lifestyle habits, patients may regain 20-30% of lost weight. Making permanent changes maximizes lasting results.

Resolution of Health Conditions

Over 80% of gastric bypass patients experience complete remission or significant improvement in their type 2 diabetes. Even for non-remission, blood sugar control improves allowing cessation of insulin and other medications.

Up to 76% of patients see resolution in hypertension without need for further medication therapy. For others, fewer and lower dosage drugs keep blood pressure at healthy levels post-surgery.

Sleep apnea fully resolves for 60% of patients after marked weight loss. For the remainder, symptoms drastically improve or supplemental oxygen therapy adequately treats residual apnea issues.

Health Improvements After Bariatric Surgery

Mental Health & Emotional Benefits

Losing a substantial amount of weight boosts self-confidence for most patients. Their new body image and pride in accomplishment has profound emotional effects. Many note boosted mood, self-esteem, an overall increased happiness.

Symptoms of anxiety and depression decrease for many after bariatric surgery and related weight loss. Being able to fully participate in activities with family or to advance careers contributes to this mental health turnaround.

Bariatric patients cite a vastly improved outlook and quality of life - able to play with kids and grandkids, travel more, and feel better equipped to excel in careers and relationships.
