Calculations for our Gastric Sleeve Weight Loss Calculator

Here is a summary of the average weight loss expected after gastric sleeve surgery:

1 year after surgery:

  • Most people lose 60-70% of their excess weight in the first year
  • This equates to 60-70 pounds lost on average for someone 100 lbs overweight

2 years after surgery:

  • Most people reach their lowest weight 12-24 months after surgery
  • The gastric sleeve success rate is approximately 80-90% at 2 years

5 years after surgery:

  • Long-term data on weight loss from gastric sleeve surgery specifically is limited since it's a newer procedure
  • For gastric bypass surgery (a similar type of bariatric surgery), over 85% of patients lose and keep off most of their excess weight at 5 years based on a large NIH study
  • Some sleeve dilation (widening) may occur over time, allowing people to eat more and potentially regain some weight if they eat all they can

To summarize all that, most weight loss occurs in the first 1-2 years, with 60-70% excess weight loss seen on average at 1 year and 80-90% success rate at 2 years. Longer term data is limited, but some weight regain is possible if diet and lifestyle changes are not maintained.
